Eli recalls his most “Chinese-filled Jewish Christmas yet” to the Hollywood Reporter. I don’t know about you, but it sounds like a good time! Take a look at Eli’s story below:
Director Eli Roth On His Most Chinese-Filled Jewish Christmas Yet:
“Like most Jews, I follow the tradition of having Chinese food on Christmas and then going to see the new Spielberg film. However, last year I took this tradition to a whole new level when I was in prep on a martial arts film I co-wrote and produced, called The Man With the Iron Fists, which we shot in China.”“We were scheduled to start photography December 26 and were on location in a small town in the south called Heng Dien. Heng Dien is something out of Blade Runner, except with an entire replica of The Forbidden City built for filming. On Christmas Eve, I had dinner at a Chinese restaurant — or as they call it, a restaurant — with the cast, which includes such Kung Fu legends as Gordon Liu and Chen Kuan-tai.”
“Everyone kept asking if it was strange for me to be spending Christmas in China, away from my family. I explained that this was just a more extreme version of every other Christmas: Chinese food and movies.”
Tonight, Eli’s episode of Curiosity airs on the Discovery Channel. Eli asks the question, “How Evil Are You?” focusing on the Milgram experiment from the 1960′s. Curiosity airs tonight at 9/8c on the Discovery Channel, so check your local listings!
WhatCulture.com has compiled their list of the “10 Future Icons of Horror.” Are we surprised to see Eli’s name among the ones listed? No, but we sure do appreciate the gesture. Although the clip itself is less than stellar, it is interesting to read “reviews” or “best of lists” from an admitted “I-don’t-like-horror-films” publisher. Take a look below:
Eli Roth
The splat packs very own Mr Eli Roth is a somewhat criticized man, his Hostel films have gained a lot of stick in the past, yet this egotistical director has got talent. His debut Cabin Fever never lived up to its hype yet was a decent enough horror flick, and although a year later he came onto the gorno scene with the Hostel movies that are the better of its subgenre. I think Mr Roth has great potential; he’s forever honing his skill, at the moment he’s a ball of clay, but possibly the long talked about Endangered Species may place him back on the horror map. From analyzing his cinematography and tension building (we studied one particular scene from Hostel: Part II which involved a scythe over and over in Film Studies) you get a sense that behind all the manipulation and bravado, this guy knows what he’s doing. Hell if Tarantino backs him, then he must be doing something right.
Director Eli Roth is offering his recently-removed wisdom teeth to a fan in a bizarre online contest.
The Hostel moviemaker underwent surgery to take out the molars earlier this week and has been keeping his Twitter followers updated about his condition. And he’s giving one fan the chance to own the teeth if they think up a good use for them.
In a series of posts on his Twitter, Roth writes, “Wisdom teeth: gone. Who wants ‘em? Either of these would make a lovely necklace or pair of earrings. You could proudly display my wisdom. Teeth. Whoever has the most fun, creative idea gets them.
“Simple is okay too (earring, necklace, nipple ring) but you have to tell me how you’re going to design it and then send a pic of the tooth when it’s done. I’m not the jewelry maker, I just grow the jewels. That sounded weird.
“So much to think about. Thanks for helping ease the pain of my Eraserhead cheeks. Love the ideas.”
Moviemaker Eli Roth has warned horror fans not to take their kids into his maze of terror during Universal Studios theme park’s Halloween celebrations this year – because the attraction is strictly R-rated.
The Hostel director has been working on the idea with Universal bosses for the past eight months and he’s convinced it will shock and terrify the hardiest film fan when it opens in the run-up to 31 October at the California theme park.
Roth has been a regular at the park’s annual month of horror nights and the Eyegore Awards, which launch the freaky festivities, for over a decade and he admits the maze attraction is “a nightmare” come true for him.
He tells WENN, “I proposed the idea last year at the Eyegore Awards, and we’ve been designing the maze together for nearly eight months. I was blown away by the production value. Every sick, wild idea I had they rendered perfectly, and they came up with many ingenious, twisted scares as well.
“They are real horror fans at Universal; they love it as much as I do, and it was a true collaboration. But be warned: this is not for kids, nor for the weak of stomach. It’s a full-on Hostel maze, no punches pulled, only intestines. It’s my nightmare come true.”
Actor/director Eli Roth wants to explore the nature of evil. Michelle Rodriguez wonders whether we could survive an alien attack. Robin Williams explores how drugs work. Maggie Gyllenhaal wants to know why sex is fun. And filmmaker Morgan Spurlock is asking if we’d be healthier if we lived as cavemen did.
Curiosity, the latest pet project from Discovery Networks founder John Hendricks, is a big undertaking: 60 episodes spanning five years, the first due Aug. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, when astrophysicist Stephen Hawking will explore how the world was created and whether God really exists.
“If you’re a suicide bomber, to some people you’re evil incarnate and to other people you’re a hero,” Roth says of his “evil” episode. (His character killed Hitler in Inglourious Basterds). He hopes the series will be provocative enough so “people will start to think outside the way they’ve been thinking.”
But he knows that merely asking about the existence of God is likely to provoke another reaction. “We’ve gotten to a point in our culture where we’re so divided” that merely asking a question is “contentious,” Roth says. But “let’s not forget that that what makes us interesting people. It’s sad that we can’t ask questions anymore. As kids we ask questions; why can’t we ask them as adults?”
Eli Roth would be the perfect director for Kick-Ass 2, according to Christopher Mintz-Plasse. The actor, who played Chris D’Amico aka Red Mist in the first film, reckons the Hostel filmmaker – part of the Splat Pack group – would work his magic on the “very violent” sequel.
“I’ve thought, Eli Roth would be such a cool director for this – or someone who hasn’t done a comic book movie but gets horror because it’s very violent. Very bloody,” he told Collider.
Christopher – who next stars in Fright Night – isn’t sure if Matthew Vaughn would be on board to direct the follow-up, which is expected to see Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz back together.
“I talked to Matthew and he’s like, ‘I don’t know if I would ever direct it, but I would definitely be on board to produce it’,” he said.

Love or hate their movies, filmmaking cyborgs like Woody Allen and Uwe Boll have found that the best way to appease a film addiction is to never step out of the director’s chair. The same can be said for other directors, some very young and some of them with decades of work behind them, who make the process of directing a feature film seem like a simple and true day job.
For others, filmmaking is a process that must be taken in strides, sometimes not just for the reason of money’s availability. Some of them seem to enjoy the pauses between, and such “vacations” can lead to more dedicated and precise work. Eli made the list at number four … take a look below at what they had to say:
#4. ELI ROTH
Most Recent Film: Hostel II (2007)
Theatrical Release Avg. This Decade: 3-4 yearsReason: The horror director’s material ranges from midnight camp-friendly (Cabin Fever) to bloody movie hell (Hostel II). While I may not be a big fan of Roth’s work, but he does have a unique sense of how to mix humor with horror. After all, the Hostel movies were at one time the gross-out movies in theaters. Now that the genre has a new hankering for human centipedes and paranormal activities, it would be intriguing to see where Roth’s genre-junkie brain fits within the evolved ramifications for what shocks mainstream audiences.
What Has He Been Doing Instead?: Recently, Roth has made humorous oddball “cameos” in movies like Inglourious Basterds and Pirahna 3D. He co-wrote a film with director RZA titled, The Man With the Iron Fists, is in post-production. A handful of producing projects are in the works for Roth. According to IMDb, Roth doesn’t have any directorial projects of his own lensing, including his long overdue full-length feature Thanksgiving, which made for an excellent fake preview in Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse.
