Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3-D is journeying to our cinema screens faster than you can say, “Piranha 3-D”, okay, it’s not out until August, but that’s no reason not to be excited! The Switchblade Romance and Hills Have Eyes director has set the level of blood on this production to “Insane”.

Co-starring Eli Roth, Christopher Lloyd, Richard Dreyfus, Jerry O’Connell, Elizabeth Shue and a whole bunch of scantily-clad ladies, Piranha 3D looks set to be very funny, very scary and very gross. Special effects legend Greg Nicotero is on board as effects supervisor. Judging from the stills…you can tell.

Three new production stills have surfaced via Shock Ya, so what better way than to share the gore? Be warned, unlike the bevvy of babes in the movie, they ain’t pretty. Here’s a synopsis too:

“In Lake Victoria Arizona, a tremor causes the lake’s floor to open, setting free scores of prehistoric piranhas… Theyre back! Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for a single, wild weekend – the 4th of July, a riot of sun, drunken fun and sex-crazed mayhem. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers. Lake Victoria sits in the crater formed by a prehistoric volcanic eruption, and when earth tremors tear open a crack in the lake floor, all hell breaks through. Piranhas – a million ravenous, razor-toothed monsters, unchanged since the dawn of time. Unstoppable killing machines acting blindly under one primeval impulse: to hunt down anything that moves and strip it to the raw, bleeding bone. In seconds.”

Much like his films, you never know where a conversation with Eli Roth will end up, last time he chatted with The New York Post he revealed a very naughty past profession. Below is a small sampling of how the interview went:

PW: Do you like being able to jump back and forth between worlds, so to speak?
Eli:
It’s empowering. Quentin said, “you may not want to switch careers, but now you have permission to write great parts for yourself and no one can give you s*** about it.” That’s been the most freeing thing. Now I feel like I can do anything and I have Quentin to thank for it.

PW: Like play a wet t-shirt contest emcee in “Piranha 3D”?
Eli:
[laughs] Yep! I told Quentin I planned to retire [as an actor] because I’d never have a better experience than I did on “Basterds.” Then [director] Alexandre Aja says, “I’m going to put you on a raft with 20 girls that you will hose down for two days straight.” I called up Quentin and said, “I think I found a director I like more than you.”

PW: You’re like the Jay-Z of film — always retiring and unretiring.
Eli:
Exactly! I can definitely unretire to host a wet t-shirt contest. That was two of the most fun days of my life. Until, being the Jew that I am, got sunblock in my eye and thought I got conjunctivitis.

PW: How’d that happen?
Eli:
From being motorboated on camera. [laughs] So we have this motorboat scene and everyone’s laughing and then my eyes start to itch, so naturally I thought it was conjunctivitis. So at 1:30 in the morning I drove from Lake Havasu to St. Vincent’s hospital because my eyes started to swell up. The doctor asked me what happened and I said, “I was involved in a motorboat accident! You know, when you put your face in between a girls … see, I was hosting this wet t-shirt contest … but it wasn’t a real wet t-shirt contest, it was for a movie” and he starts laughing. Turns out my eye had gotten so swollen because I was scratching it a lot.

PW: Talk about suffering for your craft!
Eli:
I took one for the team! That’s what I told the girl who motorboated me when she was apologizing. “I’m so sorry, they oiled up my breasts.” I still can’t believe I’m the loser that gets into a literal motorboat accident.

PW: You just might be the first!
Eli:
Leave it to Eli! I’m the guy who gets the face infection and shaves off his skin. I always get freak illnesses, so I thought of course — there I am, laughing it up as they film me in 3-D as this Playboy model smacks her tits in my face only to end up with an ice pack on my eye two hours later and in the emergency room 10 hours later.

Thanks to the wonderful Mycah (www.rose-mcgowan.com) for letting me know the Piranha 3D was released on Trailer Spy. In case you live haven’t heard, the trailer boasts an April 16 date, although Dimension Films has shifted the Real D release to Agust 27.

“A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself.”

Dimension has made the decision to delay release of Piranha 3-D from April to August. No official reason has been made from the studio, but we do know it’s August 27th, 2010.

It’s not believed, however, this is a technical delay, because pre-production for director Alexandre Aja was a longer process to deal specifically with those issues. Instead, this one’s economic. People are speculating the delay has to do with the Kick-Ass film release also on April 16th. (Source)

Piranha 3D
Opens: April 16th 2010
Cast: Elisabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Jerry O’Connell, Eli Roth
Director: Alexandre Aja

Summary: After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for Lake Victoria’s new razor-toothed residents. But with only one chance to save her family from totally being devoured, our heroine must risk everything to destroy them.

Analysis: With the horror genre having devolved into tedious torture porn, neutered ghost stories or sleep-inducing slasher remakes, it’s about time someone brought back the classic creature feature. A remake of “Gremlins” and “Innerspace” director Joe Dante’s 1978 Jaws-spoof “Piranha”, this is one of the few times a redo is justified as the original isn’t really seen as a classic while the basic premise is open to all sorts of possibilities.

Hitting the scene with the impressive “Haute Tension”, director Alexandre Aja surprised quite a few people with 2006′s remake of Wes Craven’s “The Hills Have Eyes” which managed to be one of the better examples of a horror retread that works. His 2008 effort “Mirrors” was a stinker, but the concept itself was stupid. Here though the tone is both fun and frightening, the gore is said to be extremely graphic, and the 3D potential is far more promising than it was for the likes of “My Bloody Valentine” or “The Final Destination”.
