Movie Premise: This tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero in nineteenth-century China who must unite to destroy the clan traitor who would destroy them all. Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. List Worthy Reasons: Shot in China, working with the kind of tech folk (Corey Yuen) you would want for a swords and kung fu inspired project, the Wu-Tang Clan member/Hip Hop maestro has workshopped the project for more than half a decade, formed a working alliance with Russell Crowe and Eli Roth and while we expect a kick-ass soundtrack, this should be this year’s wild card project. Also, it is presented by Quentin Tarantino … enough said.

Release Date: There is mention of an October release, but Universal have yet to confirm the date.

Kung fu films don’t get much play on FEARnet, but when they are co-written and produced by Eli Roth, how could we not give it a little love? The film in question is The Man With the Iron Fists, co-written and directed by Wu-Tang Clan founding member RZA (who also appears in the film). The film takes place in feudal China, where “a blacksmith who makes weapons for a small village is put in the position where he must defend himself and his fellow villagers” (according to IMDB). Filming began at the end of 2010 in Shanghai with Russell Crowe, Pam Grier, and Lucy Liu.

Also starring in the flick is Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch, Sorority Row). We caught up with her on the set of her new supernatural thriller 7500 and she filled us in on the status of Iron Fists.

“The original cut was four hours long, and RZA was like, “Let’s turn it into two movies!” and Eli is like, “No….” They are really excited, and I have complete faith in RZA. He’s a genius when it comes to these things and he knows the genre so well. So it has been cut down to an hour and a half. It’s picture-locked, and now he’s working on the music. I’m pretty excited. Everyone’s pretty stoked. It will have that “cult” feel. I don’t think everyone loved 36 Chambers of Shaolin or Five Deadly Venoms. It’s definitely a delicacy, but it’s still fun and awesome. Russell Crowe is doing some crazy things that you would never think he would do on film. I don’t know the final stylized look he went for. You can only imagine what Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth, and RZA could pull together. It’s going to be fun. I think it might come out in August.”

Russell Crowe is a “sweet” guy, Eli Roth has revealed. The Last Exorcism producer – who picked up the Best Horror award at the Jameson Empire Awards – saw a different side to the Oscar-winning actor, who has been arrested on assault charges and rumoured to have a temper, on their new film, The Man With The Iron Fist.

“Nobody believes this but I say Russell Crowe is an absolute sweetie pie,” Eli said. “I said, Russell, I am going to tell people what a nice guy you are. He said, ‘You can tell people but no one will believe it’. He was fantastic, he was great and really funny and really cool. It’s like I am outing him as a really sweet and easy-going guy. He was hilarious, and we had such a fun time making the movie.”

The martial arts film, which also stars Lucy Liu and Pam Grier, is set for release later this year.

“I just wrapped The Man With The Iron Fist that I co-wrote with RZA from Wu-Tang Clan,” continued Eli. “I produced it with the same person from The Last Exorcism and RZA directed it.”

For those wondering why Eli news has been rather slow lately, he is currently in China working on production for the upcoming RZA-film, “The Man With the Iron Fists”. Eli co-wrote the film with RZA and Russell Crowe has been confirmed as the films star. Rumor has it, Lucy Liu and Cung Le have joined the cast.

“The Man With The Iron Fist” could be the oddest movie of 2011 — a martial arts flick that Eli Roth co-wrote with RZA, who’s also slated to direct and act in it as “a weapons-making village blacksmith in feudal China,” reportedly alongside Russell Crowe and, according to the IMDb page, Lucy Liu and martial artist Cung Le.

And now, according to Twitch, the $20 million project is actually filming, with Roth tweeting about the production from China.

He’s battled “Gladiators,” shot arrows at the Sheriff of Nottingham and now, thanks to RZA, Russell Crowe will become a kung fu master. In an interview with E! News, RZA opened up about his forthcoming movie, “The Man With the Iron Fists,” which features Crowe. RZA said that he will co-star and direct the Universal-released feature, which boasts a $20 million budget. As for the details of the plot and Crowe’s character in particular, the Wu-Tang frontman is keeping a tight lip.

“I won’t spoil it for you, but Russell’s gonna be the baddest man alive,” RZA told E!’s Marc Malkin. “That man is in fighting shape. That man will knock you out.”

Development for “The Man With the Iron Fists” started almost five years ago when RZA sat down with Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth (“Hostel”) to discuss the story. Roth is now signed on as a co-writer and co-producer.

Shooting kicks off in December on location in Shanghai. Though RZA and Crowe worked together in 2007’s “American Gangster” (even recording a song that didn’t make the soundtrack), the legendary hip-hop musician admits he’s got jitters on directing a Hollywood giant.

“It’s nerve-wracking,” RZA said. “He’s a master of the craft. I’m quite sure that I may learn something from him.”

Universal is making a deal to finance and distribute The Man With The Iron Fists, a stylized martial arts film that will mark the feature directorial debut of RZA, the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder who has written the screenplay with Eli Roth. RZA will play the title character, a blacksmith who forges weapons for the inhabitants of a village in feudal China. They are forced to defend themselves, and before you know it, everybody is kung fu fighting.

Roth will produce with Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman. RZA will also produce the soundtrack. The film shoots in September in Hong Kong at a budget under $20 million.

Roth, the Hostel helmer who made an acting splash playing the Bear Jew in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, doesn’t know if he will bring his baseball bat and play a part in this film, but said that Iron Fists was forged under the creative godfathering of Tarantino and has the stylized period vibe present in Kill Bill.

“It started with a trip RZA and I took with Quentin to Iceland in 2005,” Roth said. “We flew back, ended up snowed in in Boston, staying at my parents’ house in Newton. Turned out that my dad and RZA grew up in Brooklyn and went to the same Brownsville junior high school and swam in the same public pool. He hooked me on his dream of directing and reinventing the Kung Fu movie genre. It reminded me of my love of horror. RZA went to the set of Kill Bill, and got a master directing course from Quentin. Nothing was happening with the script, and I formed this company, Arcade, with Eric Newman, that made Last Exorcism, a film that comes out in August through Lionsgate. We were looking for projects and I suggested RZA’s script. I wrote the latest draft with him. While I was away shooting Inglourious Basterds, RZA went to China to shoot test footage on his own, with all the choreography. It was very visual and I think he will bring to life a script that mixes kung fu with a spaghetti Western mindset and a hip hop influence.

“RZA has imagined every tribe, every fighting style, every costume,” Roth said. “He knows kung fu like I know horror.”

The film in question is RZA’s (aka Robert Diggs – Wu-Tang Clan superstar) upcoming Kung Fu project, The Man with the Iron Fist. The cocksure commentary comes from the multi-faceted Eli Roth (writer/director of the Hostel series and star of Inglourious Basterds).A ceShowBiz got the details from WENN, who spoke to Roth about RZA and the flick.

Roth helped RZA with Man with the Iron Fist; the film also has Quentin Tarantino and Eric Newman (Children of Men) attached as producers. RZA (who performed in Repo Men and has worked on lots of movie soundtracks, including 8 mile and Belly) both penned the script and will direct. Here’s what Roth had to say about the film:

“We worked together on the script all summer, and we have watched and discussed many, many movies. He’s already got the soundtrack figured out. He understands every detail of the world. It’s going to be something spectacular, unique, and original that stays true both to the genre and to RZA’s fans. It’s a really fun script. We see this film as the first step in a franchise.”

Here’s what he had to say about RZA:

“RZA’s one of the smartest, most creative people I have ever met. He’s obsessed with movies the same way Quentin [Tarantino] and I are, and his knowledge of the kung fu genre is nothing short of astounding. He knows everything, and everyone in it, and he’s on a mission to reinvent the genre he loves.”

Quite the love fest. Although, a deep knowledge and love for a genre sounds like as good of a place as any to start, in my opinion. And who doesn’t love a good Kung Fu flick? Isn’t that the very reason why we have rainy weekends?

No word on when The Man with the Iron Fist will be released. (Source)
